The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring several personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct personas, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though additional clips show the protagonist exploring a desolate church.
A World of Individual Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."
The core gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers where their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one standing might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
