Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned within a psychic prison forged from the past of the villain Henry. Their mission for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to experience a defining event from Henry's early years—a moment that may just hold the key to defeating him once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

When she finds Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. A clever observation a spyglass found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

They watch a Henry as a boy come across an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma wasn't just a fight for life.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a realm later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the captain, who returned in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.

The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to hand over to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their version of the tests. This spy in the mine shaft is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase almost certainly contained vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the box could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The prequel shows that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he fights the control of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how Will was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

His lasting fear linked to that memory shows how utterly horrifying the event was for him. While he controls the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to gain strength.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the series finale that awaits.
