The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the hit series reaching its finale—and the next chapter officially in the works—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“It feels like an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I hear about it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Will the showrunner Know the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering the writers are not listening by fan response, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… sort of.
“We have some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, why not reference the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
