Chainsaw Man Dominates Domestic Box Office in Debut Weekend

Has Sony repeated their success? Coming after the triumph of the blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned over $600 million globally, the latest Chainsaw Man film has reached beyond the $100M mark internationally, attaining a global total of $108 million during its debut. This feature outperformed Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its second week in theaters, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).

Impressive American and International Performance

The work of director Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a direct continuation of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It earned $18.2M in the U.S. after a powerful $5.2M Saturday earnings and $4.5M Sunday take. Globally, the MAPPA-produced movie earned nearly $15 million across 46 Sony markets, resulting in a global sum of over $60 million via Sony ($43.1M international, $18.2 million in the U.S.). Sony has yet to announce its official box office total.

Parallels to Previous Successful Anime Films

Specialist agency a leading anime marketing group previously spoke, drawing parallels between the feature's anticipated earnings to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned thirty-four million dollars in the domestic market in the year 2022 and debuted with a comparable $18 million in the U.S.. This movie's opening frame aligns with that marker, while its $108M worldwide total is now positioned just behind Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s $166.6M overall box office. Even if it doesn't seem possible this Chainsaw Man film will achieve the numbers of smash success Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a significant success for Sony.

Fan Engagement Strategies Boost Performance

The studio and its partner the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have effectively leveraged audience interaction to drive their supremacy at the cinema for anime films. The movie's promotional efforts kicked off at the Anime Expo in LA in July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, special events, and Pochita photo ops, and later included a significant involvement at NYCC featuring never-before-seen content, fan raffles, and further MAPPA discussions. There was even an private showing for enthusiasts for the public and popular figures too after the last day of the event.

2025 is a major time for anime, and for the company, which has one more animated movie premiering in 2025 in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in the month of November.
